The design celebrates more than 160 years of brewing heritage while introducing a fresh and dynamic hospitality experience that feels unmistakably Melbourne. The venue also elevates the presentation of key products, from brewery fresh Carlton Draught poured straight from polished copper tanks to curated menus that reflect modern pub dining at its best.
Our design approach centred on storytelling and segmentation, creating layered spaces where each level offers its own mood and purpose. The Russell Street arrival is striking and immediate, framed by polished Carlton Draught tanks that set the tone for what lies within. Here guests discover Australia’s first Carlton Draught bar, The Carlton Lounge, serving fresh brews with retro charm, social seating and a pool table.
Level One offers dining and drinks in the restaurant and bar, serving up classic Aussie pub favourites and playful nostalgic cues throughout the space. The sports bar on Level 2, Abe’s Athletic Hall, channels old school cool with arcade rooms, karaoke spaces and a glowing illuminated bar set beneath a sweeping digital screen, immersing guests in an atmosphere built for energy and connection.
Rising to the rooftop, the design shifts to create a city sanctuary. A modern urban auditorium where intimate lighting, lush landscaping and panoramic skyline views invite moments of pause, celebration and social connection above the bustling streets below.
Every element has been considered to enhance the customer journey, from intuitive way finding to spaces that naturally evolve from day to night, encouraging guests to stay longer and explore more.
With history in its bones and modern energy in every detail, Hickens Hotel stands as a new icon in Melbourne’s hospitality landscape.
